Make Today Your Grand Opening

by Ken on May 27, 2009

openAre you putting the finishing touches on your dreams?  Another coat of paint?  Another can of polish?

Oh, the siren song of perfection.  It calls us all, until we find ourselves drowning in the promise of another day, another month, another year, another life.

But just outside your window, there’s a whole world waiting, and nothing’s going to happen until you let it in.  So why not ditch the padlock and open up the doors?

Make today your grand opening.  Show the world your wares.  Share your poems, your songs, your drawings.

Don’t worry about whether or not they’re good enough.  Just focus on getting better over time as you become new and improved.

Don’t worry about the inventory levels.  You only have one item?   Open the doors anyway.  Then make another and then another and then another.  In time,  you’ll fill the shelves.

Don’t worry about whether or not there’s a market for what you’re making.  If you can’t sell it, then give it away.  If you can’t give it away, then keep it for yourself.  Then make something new.

I know it’s scary.  It scares me too, but it’s so much easier once you cut the ribbon.  All that fretting and worrying teaches you nothing, but experience, the constant trainer,  provides you with an endless stream of lessons and ideas for new projects and new directions.

So, what are we waiting for?  I’ll hit the lights.  You get the doors.

Thanks Ken…again, you hit the nail on the head and have eased some of what I’ve been feeling! I’m getting ready to make some moves of my own regarding my business venture and reading this just reassured me of a few things! Best wishes on your endeavor, you’re doing an awesome job! :-)

Wow, it’s awfully bright in here. :)

Good post, Ken. Perfection is unattainable, but satisfaction is not. Doing what you love makes you satisfied, and just might please others, too.

Great post.

This is so crazy! You have no idea how close I came to writing about perfection today (which means a post is percolating, and is forthcoming, but today….something more was pressing ;-) )

Thanks for this reminder!
All the best!

And how funny! I just visited your site and what did I see but your article about how anger is a wake up call. Just what I needed to read. Thanks, Deb.

Hahaha….well, I can’t honestly say that I’ve ever been called that before…but I like it! ;-) I feel the same way, like someone lit a fire and I’m ready to burn, baby, burn! lol! It’s scary yet exciting all at the same time! I didn’t feel ready before but I do now! And reading your post just assured me that even if nothing is perfect yet or too unsure…I can still move forward towards my dream. I’m sure you can relate! Here’s to moving forward and onward! Thanks again…as usual, it came at the appropriate time! ;-)

I liked this post b/c it reminded me of something new I’ve just started- sewing. I have quickly realized this is something I absolutely love doing. Will I ever be good at it? No. Will I ever sell anything? Never. But it’s really good therapy for me and I’m in a very happy place when I am at my machine creating something.

I think creating for creating’s sake is a perfectly acceptable activity. Human beings have a need to make things. It’s how we give back some of what we’ve been given in this life.
