What to Do if You Don’t Have What it Takes

by Ken on June 17, 2009

knowMaybe you’ve been thinking about trying some new thing, but you’re afraid you don’t possess the necessary knowledge, experience, or skills.  Well, I have some good news and some bad news.  Let’s begin with the bad.

The bad news is this.  If you’re thinking about doing some new thing well, there’s a real good chance you don’t have the right stuff, and to make matters worse, you don’t even know what the right stuff is.

But here’s the good news.  There’s a simple way to find out what you lack and what you need to do to get it. Ready? Here it is. Do it anyway.

That’s right.  You just do it anyway, even if you’re thoroughly inept.

Are you lacking the necessary knowledge?  Well, you won’t know what you don’t know until you dig in, and how can you expect yourself to obtain the knowledge you don’t even know you need.  You have to do the thing you wish to do in order to discover the obstacles. Once you come to them, you can do something about them.  Once you know what you don’t know that you need to know, you can do what it takes to learn.

Are you short on experience?  If you don’t begin, you’ll be just as short tomorrow and probably a little bit longer on regret.   Try that new thing today.  Fifteen minutes of trying will add fifteen minutes to your level of experience.

Don’t have the skills?  Neither did anyone else until they tried.  Skills come with practice, and doing the thing you want to do is the best practice I can think of.

This is probably at least the fifteenth blog or website I’ve tried to create.  Although it’s still a work in progress, it’s leaps and bounds ahead of my earlier attempts.  But without those earlier attempts, this site would not exist.  It’s a product of the knowledge, experience, and skills I obtained while fumbling my way through the others.

So, if you don’t have what it takes, start anyway.  It’s the only way to get what you need.

Thanks for this Ken….it’s because of this sensible piece of advice that I want to go to the next step/level…otherwise, I will stay stuck and never know whether or not I’m good at what my next venture will be! ;-)

As I’ve told you, Della, I always write about what I’m going through, so we’re at the same spot.

Absolutely! The only way to get ‘there’ is to start (and give yourself permission for ‘early stuff’ to not be ‘great stuff’.)

Sometimes, if we’re a writer, we compare our early work to the works of Hemingway or Tolstoy — and find ourselves coming up short.

We don’t give ourselves room for ‘first drafts’.

Showing up and doing the work is the only way we get better.
Thanks!
All the best!

So simple and so true. Always prioritise action and real-world feedback over perfect analysis/ plans on paper. Great post, Ken

Wow, I wish I’d read this post earlier. I was having a *lot* of trouble getting myself to go upstairs and draw this morning, and I finally did get myself to go up there by putting a time limit on it and also a limit on how much I was expecting of myself. It’s hard not to fall in the familiar habit of wanting to be the best and be perfect and impress the heck out of my teacher. I just keep reminding myself that I only need to do well enough in my drawing class to get into the next class, which is the gateway to taking the fashion design class that is the whole point of this endeavor. Keep these amazing insights coming, Ken; I’m so glad you are writing this blog.

I just write what I need to hear, so you’re not alone.

Ken,

I’ve been reading through your previous blogs and I’ve got to say you are doing an amazing job. Keep it up!

This particular post is a total bulls-eye hit. I have a business idea but am far from an expert in the field. Being me I made that into a barrier and it stopped me from moving forward because for some reason I thought I had to have it all figured out now before I could start. But you are right. I need to just get it going, slowly, doing something daily and see where it leads. That’s where I am heading right now.

Thanks again,
Mo

Hey Ken,

Postcard #1 – I’ve gone from having nothing done to creating a skeleton/template for my business website. I have also found a host to put it on and as soon as I pick a name I’ll get the domain purchased. I’m working on the initial content now and actually got stuck there and have not done much the past 2 weeks. It wasn’t fun anymore so I got frustrated and stopped. I plan to work on it later tonight and see how much I can do.

Thanks,
Mo
