The lyrics are somewhat gruesome (songs can tell horror stories just like novels and movies sometimes do), but what I love about this video of The Decemberists performing at Rock the Garden 2009 is the image of five drummers banging away and the lead singer, Colin Meloy, screaming out the refrain while strumming his guitar.
Leading a life of quiet inspiration isn’t always so quiet. Every now and then, you need to howl at the moon and remind yourself that you’re still here, that you’re still fighting, and that life, with all its ups and downs, is still one hell of a ride.
So, why not make some noise? Why not sound the drums?
P.S. If you understood the lyrics and found them disturbing, you might like to know that the children come back to haunt him in a later song on the album.
