Creative People Make Things: They Make Commitments

by Ken on November 17, 2009

Creative people make commitments. It’s how they get things made. While I’m all for starting things you may not finish (I call that exploration), I also believe you have a need to see things through. Otherwise, you get discouraged.

Commit to Filling Your Shelves

I once heard Steve Martin, the comedian/actor/novelist/musician, say he likes to get things on the shelf. I think we all need things on our shelves. Finished things.

A finished work motivates you to begin again, but to turn one out, you have to commit.

You have to commit to creating room, no matter how tiny the room may seem.

You have to commit to carving out blocks of time, no matter how small those blocks may be.

You have to commit to showing up and sticking around, even if it’s only for a little while every day.

You have to commit to doing this until the thing is done, no matter how long it takes.

It may take a day. It may take a year. It may take a life time. But it first takes a commitment.

Pick one thing and commit to seeing it through to the end, show yourself what you’re made of, and discover the satisfaction of making things. Your shelves will thank you for it.

Yes sir. A commited life is a creative life. How could you ever get things done if you don’t make a commitment to them?
