Put Down That Project

by Ken on December 1, 2009

I’m tired. I just finished the rough draft of my first book and there’s so much more to do. It’s far from complete. There are pictures to be drawn, poems to be written, and an introduction to be crafted. I need to fill in the sections I skipped so I could nail down the larger points. The whole thing needs a major rewrite.

But I’m not going to do any of it – not right now at least.

For now, I’m going to step away. I’m going to read. I’m going to play my guitar. I’m going to doodle again.

Tonight, I’m going out with a friend. Tomorrow, I think I’ll take Carol to dinner.

I’m going to call my daughter and see how she’s doing. I’m going to watch a movie and fall asleep half way through it.

And all the while, I’ll be working on my book, because taking a break is a part of the creative process, and a very important one at that.

When you’re working on a piece of writing, a piece of art, or even a piece of your business, you have to know when to step away.

Your mind needs time to sort things out and make sense of everything that’s come before. Your body needs time to rejuvenate. Your heart needs time to reconnect with the rest of your existence.

It’s a good time to relax, have some fun, and waste a few hours without feeling the need to apologize, and that’s just what I’m going to do.
