It wasn’t easy to train my ass,
to teach it to sit and obey.
I had to coax it with good music
and a bowl of M&M’s.
Each morning, when I awoke,
I dragged it from its bed
and placed it in the chair,
firmly, deliberately, sternly.
It wiggled and fidgeted
and tried sleight of ham,
but my years of parenting
had served me rather well.
Patient and ever resolute,
I stuck to my buns.
“Sit!” I said.
“Stay!” I cried.
And eventually it did,
just as I commanded.
It sat and remained, and from rising abstained
and allowed me to do my work.
These days, when the alarm clock sounds,
its the first one up
and the first one out
from beneath the pile of blankets.
And it draws me even
when I wish it would not,
forward, backward, and down
into the two spots we’ve carved out.

Ah yes, treat training!

Of course. I prefer carrots (and M&Ms) to sticks.
your drawing reminds me of John Lennon’s drawings in In His Own Write.

Thanks, Barbara. I finally realized that the drawings, despite my skill level, are one of the things people like about the blog.
Yes, I love the drawings…but your writing is fantastic!

Good one! Have since read your comments about folks not liking your poetry – you are wrong, wrong, wrong…. Yea there have been a few that I thought needed more polishing, but there have been many more wonderful gems along the way and I look forward to many more… Part of the problem is that we are generally not taught to value poetry and many of your readers may not have been exposed much. It’s gotten a bad rap which you can help change. Maybe that’s your mission!
Thanks for your comments, Jane. It’s not that I’m never going to post poems again.
I’m just rethinking how to best deliver them and what’s best for the readers of this blog. If I post a poem here, it has to work for the overall mission of Mildly Creative. I am, however, going to post many more to Ken and Paper. People who like them will go there and read them.
