A Mantra for Muddled Times

by Ken on April 11, 2010

Okay, so you don’t know HOW to do that thing you want to do. Don’t let that stop you from getting started.

Sure, you can’t predict all the obstacles you’ll face, you don’t know how your efforts are going to be received, and you’re unsure about the requirements.

What skills will you need to develop? What changes will you need to make? How are you going to adapt?

You really don’t know, and you’ll never find out as long as you’re waiting.

But the one thing you always know, if you take a moment to think about it, is what you can do right now. There’s no data to analyze, no tea leaves to read. You just know.

It’s only when you’re trying to fix the past or predict the future that you start feeling so dumb and helpless. But when you’re here, in the present, you have all the information you need to make decisions.

When you find yourself in muddled times and facing baffling challenges, let this be your mantra: “I may not know how to do this, but I know what to do next.”

You know someone you can call to help you generate ideas and find solutions. You know some place you can go that always inspires you. You know something you can do that will have an immediate impact on your mood, your effectiveness, your progress.

Tomorrow is uncertain. So is next week, next month, and let’s not even talk about next year.

Instead, set your sights on this moment. You’ll know what to do.

Right on Ken! We so often paralyze ourselves from pursuing our dreams because we tend to look so far ahead and get caught up in the future. And of course when we do that, that “future place” seems like a giant leap from where we are, and often time it is. When we come back to the present and just focus on the next step in the direction of that big dream, it is always something simple and something doable like making a phone call or checking out a website, etc.

Thanks once again for sharing such helpful insights!

This post really came at the exact right moment. I was just about to start a new project that I have been putting off (due to fear of the unknown). I thought “maybe I’ll just read Ken’s blog first”. You are a genius with perfect timing. Thanks.

That was a fun read. It sure is fun, exciting, and scary to tackle the unknown. I think we can always look at our past ‘N’ years for experience to draw on. And not dwelling on the future is definitely less overwhelming. The present moment is always just a second – that’s not too bad to handle :)
